Jannik Lindbaek, Leonard McCarthy and Duncan Smith were the key speakers at a high-level seminar on Integrity and Anti-Corruption arranged at NIB’s headquarters in Helsinki on 12 December 2012

Together with the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) and Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO), NDF arranged a joint seminar on Integrity and Anti-Corruption for the Board of Directors, Senior Management and Members of the Anti-Corruption Committees of the three institutions. Fighting fraud and corruption is a priority for NIB, NEFCO and NDF.

Even though the institutions have different mandates and work in different countries, there is a broad experience that can be exchanged in order to strengthen the cooperation in this area. Therefore, the three institutions invited three highly notable speakers to share their views and experience on fighting corruption. Jannik Lindbaek , who is former President of NIB and former Executive Vice President of IFC, and one of the founding members of Transparency International Norway, gave an introduction on how the International Financial Institutions (IFI’s) have handled the questions of integrity and anti-corruption over the last couple of decades, as well as on how and why Transparency International was founded. Leonard McCarthy , Vice President, Integrity at World Bank Group, presented example of the devastating effects of fraud and corruption, and how the World Bank works on fighting such misconducts. Duncan Smith , Deputy Head of Fraud and Investigations Division at European Investment Bank (EIB), gave a presentation from the EIB and EU perspective with some examples on investigation procedures and prevention.

The presentations led to rich discussions on, among other things, how NIB, NEFCO and NDF as small institutions could have a more active role among other International Financial Institutions (IFI’s) by for example joint approaches in individual cases. In the evening, NEFCO hosted a dinner for all the participants.
