A review of climate change activities co-financed by NDF is being carried out in Laos this week together with the Asian Development Bank.

Progress is being reviewed in the technical assistance programme called Capacity Enhancement for Coping with Climate Change, which is the first comprehensive climate change related capacity building program in Laos.

Progress and results of the Climate Resilient Cities project are also discussed in a regional knowledge sharing workshop. The project covers urban climate change adaptation activities in three selected cities in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Both programs confirm an increased capacity in dealing with issues related to climate change at the national and provincial levels in Laos and in the region. The programs include climate change adaptation pilot projects in the areas of flood and drought management, agricultural water supply as well as urban planning. The experiences from the pilot projects provide valuable inputs for further scaling up similar activities elsewhere in Laos and the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Activities have also confirmed the need for a more systematic determination of the most vulnerable spots for the impacts of climate change, as well as the need for efficient coordination and division of labour in all climate change related actions. The pilot projects have provided concrete benefits for several hundred people in the project regions e.g. by reducing the risk for the impact of floods and droughts for agriculture through various water related improvements.
