EUR 1.5 million
Project period: 2012-2017
Partner agency: Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) / Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN)

Objectives

This programme aims to introduce and develop a commercially viable biogas market in Nicaragua that will improve the incomes, livelihoods and quality of life of rural farmers and their families through the benefits of biogas technology. This will be the first example of a comprehensive biogas market development programme in Latin America and the Caribbean, and therefore it is expected to be a significant source of knowledge and learning. The beneficiaries include agricultural producers, service companies, equipment manufacturers, masons, cooperatives, financing institutions, etc. The dairy sector has been selected as a market entry point to pilot a biogas market potential and benefits. The Programme will create a commercially sound and sustainable biogas technology market by promoting biogas technology, disseminating information, building capacities and developing and supporting businesses. To achieve the objectives, the Programme will include the following components: (i) marketing, promotion and awareness raising; (ii) business development and support; (iii) facilitation of appropriate financing solutions; (iv) extension and end-user follow up; and (v) knowledge, learning and dissemination. The Programme is implemented by SNV in partnership with HIVOS.

Financing

Total cost of the project will be EUR 4.8 million, of which NDF will provide EUR 1.6 million, IDB/FOMIN EUR 1.6 million and counterpart funds will be EUR 1.7 million.
