Objectives
The NDF support forms part of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Nacala Road Corridor project Phase III. The overall objective of the Nacala Road Corridor project is to develop an East-West road transport link between Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique to increase national and regional connectivity and stimulate socio-economic development.
The objective of the NDF component is to provide the National Road Administration (ANE) and other stakeholders with capacity and tools to manage climate impact threats to road development including planning, design, construction and maintenance. The NDF component encompasses the following five major activities:
1) Capacity Development and Mainstreaming of Climate Change Adaptation within ANE
2) Climate change-proofing of the Nacala Corridor road (Muita-Mandimba-Lichinga road)
3) Road network vulnerability mapping
4) Economics of climate change
5) Road asset management and technical issues
The major outcome of the NDF support will be that climate change resilience becomes an integral part of the decision-making process at ANE with the components 2-5 feeding information into component 1.
Financing
Total cost of the project is EUR 98.77 million with NDF contributing EUR 3.8 million. The AfDB will finance EUR 44.91million (USD 61.25 million) blended credit and grant. The Government of Mozambique will contribute EUR 12.96 million (USD 17.68 million).
