Hydropower Sustainability Assessment
Ref: NDF C45

EUR 0.5 million
Project period: 2013-2015
Partner agency: World Bank (WB)

Objectives

The general objective is to assess the sustainability of existing and identified hydropower schemes in Tanzania. More specifically, the study will assess the impacts of climate change on the future production of hydro power, assess the impacts of upstream human activities on the generation and propose concrete adaptation investments and capacity development. The assessment will in its major part be conducted as a desktop study in which hydropower production from all existing and future identified hydropower plants will be simulated under carefully selected water use and climate scenarios.  One case study will be chosen in which a more detailed assessment of the water resources management and operation rules will be conducted to provide concrete suggestion of adaptation measures in the upstream catchment area and improved operation of the power plant.

WB will be the executing agency and NDF’s partner in the proposed project, and NDF’s funding will be channelled through WB as joint co-financing.

Financing

Total cost of the project will be EUR 1.6 million (USD 2.0 million), of which NDF will provide EUR 0.5 million, WB EUR 0.76 million (USD 0.95 million) and DFID is expected to provide EUR 0.36 million (USD 0.45 million).
