Descripition
 
On a global scale, the livestock sector represents a significant cause of GHG emissions, the main sources of emissions being enteric fermentation in ruminants and manure management. Meanwhile, climate change has a negative impact on agricultural productions, causing serious threats to human livelihoods. Due to the impacts of climate change, the Bolivian dairy production is based on poor quality forage, which gives rise to increased susceptibility to diseases and a deficient digestive process of the ruminants causing great emission of methane from the rumen and low productivity rates. Additionally, current manure management in Bolivian milk modules is inefficient, leading to high emissions of GHGs and lack of sufficient use of the manure in the local production of crops.
 
The project’s overall objective is to strengthen the capacity within the Bolivian agricultural sector to build more sustainable and climate resilient farming systems. Through the promotion of organic products containing naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms (i.e. probiotic bacteria), the project will assist Bolivian farmers to mitigate GHG emissions, build resilience to climate change and develop economically viable agribusiness. The project introduces a probiotic feed additive to improve the digestive process of dairy cattle and a bio-stimulant to be integrated as part of new manure management practices working to stimulate the decomposing process and to enrich the microbial life in the manure. The processed manure will serve as a high-value product to be used as an organic fertilizer by the dairy farmers themselves and to be marketed and further processed into a bio-fertilizer, turning waste management into a source of revenue for the dairy farmers. The application of bio-fertilizer will be implemented in agricultural farming systems, as a sustainable alternative to chemical-based fertilizers. Regenerating a degraded soil into a fertile soil rich in microbial life reduces the negative impact of climate-related stresses on plant growth by strengthening root systems and resistance towards pests.
 
The products introduced in the project are based on technologies developed by Biosa Danmark ApS for the past 20 years. These technologies will be transferred to the local partner Biotop S.R.L. in Bolivia, through training and sharing of technical know-how. The project engaged milk producers and agricultural farmers in three different areas in the high and low land of Bolivia (La Paz, Oruro and Cochabamba) and works with local farm associations to reach the individual farmers.
 
Expected key results
 

• Implementation of probiotic supplement in dairy cattle feeding, contributing to a reduced production of methane from enteric fermentation and improved productivity and health of the cattle, generating increased income of the dairy producers from the milk sale.
• New manure management system that utilizes the manure to produce organic fertilizer with the application of a bio-stimulant, causing reduced GHG emission from the manure and creating a circular production chain, allowing the farmers to enhance their own production of crops and to enter the market of fertilizers, generating a diversified and improved economy of the farmers.
• Production of a bio-fertilizer based on processed manure and added effective beneficial microorganisms to be integrated into agricultural farming systems, with the effect of rebuilding a fertile soil, increasing better yields, and improving resilience towards fluctuation climate conditions.
