EUR 4.5 million
Project period: 2011-2019
Partner agency: Inter-American Development Bank

Objectives

The objective of the programme is to support the efforts of the Nicaraguan government to reduce poverty by promoting access to sustainable electricity services, to increase the energy efficiency and the share of renewable energy sources, and thus mitigate and help adapt to climate change.

The programme consists of seven components:

I. Extension of distribution networks
II. Reduction of distribution losses
III. Promotion of small hydro stations in off-grid areas
IV. Master plan and feasibility studies to advance hydro, wind and geothermal projects
V. Increase energy efficiency e.g. in lighting
VI. Reinforcement of transmission systems in rural areas
VII. Strengthening of regional distribution entities.

Financing

The programme is a joint sector initiative that includes support from 8 donors including WB, IDB and EU. NDF finances part of component IV. NDF will cofinance the Master Plan studies of the two major river systems with potential for hydro power development, feasibility studies for six potential wind parks and co-finance geothermal exploration on the Cosigüina Volcano. The NDF financed components will prepare for follow-up investments under the programme.
