The NDF Board has approved a EUR 4.0 million support to include climate change adaptation into the Transport and Urban Mobility Project (STUMP) in Senegal.

The objective of the proposed NDF adaptation component is to develop the capacity of relevant stakeholders in Senegal to climate-proof road infrastructure planning, design and maintenance.

The ProClimate Facility supports climate friendly investment projects by providing guarantees that will close remaining financing gaps and so complete the financing plan.

The Nordic Development Fund (NDF) has provided EUR 10 million for the ProClimate Facility (ProCF) which establishes and pilots a partial climate guarantee and technical assistance facility.

The Nordic Climate Facility (NCF) has signed fourteen agreements for climate change mitigation and adaptation projects.

The facility, which is funded by the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and jointly administered with NEFCO, provides grant financing for climate related projects in low-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

NDF grants EUR 3.5 million to help indigenous peoples and Afro-descendants in Honduras tackle climate change challenges

The overall objective is to increase the capacity of these peoples to respond to climate change, to secure civil society monitoring of obligations related to climate change and to provide renewable energy solutions to local communities.

NDF supports the transfer from polluting diesel buses to gas-driven buses in the city of Dhaka in Bangladesh.

The Government of Bangladesh has embarked on a program to replace old buses running on diesel with new vehicles running on gas to decrease costs and improve air quality.

The Government of Ghana has requested financing from NDF grants for the proposed “Landfill Gas Capture & Utilization Project”, which has been developed under the World Bank led Ghana Second Urban Environmental Sanitation Project (UESP II).

The objective is to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases (methane) from the solid waste landfills and increase the use of renewable energy.

Flooding created by increasing annual rainfall is a primary concern for protecting the existing road network and a threat for future investments in the transport sector in Cambodia.

NDF will support a project aimed at reducing the road network vulnerability to climate change with a grant of EUR 4.2 million.

In Nicaragua, storms and floods have had great human impact in recent years. In addition, economic losses for the period 1997­–2006 averaged 2.7 per cent of GDP annually.

Higher temperatures associated with climate change will likely exacerbate this situation and will increase both frequency and intensity of severe weather conditions and related natural disasters.

Nicaragua has one of the lowest electrification levels in Latin America and the Caribbean. A large share of the population lacks access to electricity, which constitutes a serious obstacle to economic and social development.

In spite of a considerable potential for power generation from renewable energy sources, in particular from geothermal plants, hydro and wind turbines, Nicaragua continues to be highly dependent on fossil fuels.

The World Bank PEPAM project aims at increasing access to sustainable water and sanitation services.

NDF will participate in the GreenPyme programme to promote energy efficiency among small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) in Central America.

The NDF Board approved in March a grant of EUR 2.2 million for the programme. The programme focuses on information dissemination and training targeted towards SMEs, energy auditors, financiers and authorities.

The Nordic Climate Facility, launched in autumn 2009, has attracted great interest. The facility supports technology and know-how exchange between the Nordic countries and low-income countries in the area of climate change.

The response to the first call for proposals was larger than expected. A total of 138 applications were received, of which 33 projects have been shortlisted for full proposals.

The first Call for Proposals under the EEP Mekong attracted wide interest.

The first call for proposals in the Mekong Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) is now closed. More than 150 project ideas were received and the eligibility check and screening of the proposals is under way.
