A Nordic Climate Facility (NCF) project in Nepal is helping women identify and test alternative income streams.

The World Bank has been building up valuable practical knowhow on the emerging issue of linkages between climate change and health, thanks to a recently completed three-year project largely financed by NDF.

The project particularly focused on risks and opportunities in Africa, with Mozambique chosen for country-level work on diagnostics.


The African Guarantee Fund (AGF), the International Trade Centre (ITC) and the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) are organising a Green Finance Conference on 21 June in Nairobi, Kenya.

AGF and ITC, with funding from NDF, have partnered to expand access to climate-focused finance for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa.

EUR 7.5 million in equity and grant financing from NDF will help the responsAbility Renewable Energy Holding Company bring financial resources and expertise to clean energy projects in Africa.

The private equity fund responsAbility Renewable Energy Holding Company (rAREH) will receive EUR 7.0 million (approx. USD 7.8 million) in shareholder equity and EUR 0.5 million (approx. USD 0.6 million) in grant financing from NDF.

The NCF-co-financed project “Clean Energy Promotion through Microfinance in Ethiopia” has won the National Energy Globe Award Ethiopia.

This award is the second to be won by the project, which was also given the 2016 Best Climate Practices Award by the International Center for Climate Governance.

The NDF project “Climate Smart Solutions for Small-scale Water and Energy Supply” has provided an innovative solution to Tanzania’s rural water supply challenge.

Through solar-powered water pumps, the project has brought tap water to communities in rural Tanzania, saving time, money and health problems resulting from unclean water consumption.


Two new NDF publications are now available online, including recent institutional and operational highlights.

During 2016, nine NDF-backed climate-related projects reached completion.

1 June - NDF hosted Dr. Abou-Zeid, Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, ICT and Tourism at the African Union Commission for discussions on climate change, energy and infrastructure initiatives in Africa.

The Energy and Infrastructure Commissioner, Dr Amani Abou-Zeid, from the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa visited NDF on 1 June together with representatives of the Finnish Ministry of foreign Affairs.


NDF and AfDB: 25 years of collaboration and co-financing, and the partnership now stronger than ever

The annual meeting of the African Development Bank (AfDB), held in Ahmedabad, India, from 22 to 25 May, was also an occasion for NDF and AfDB to recognise their 25 year long history of collaboration in co-financing.

Young “climate champions” recruited from local communities are playing a prominent role in a Nordic Climate Facility project designed to help the residents of slum districts in Dhaka, Bangladesh, adapt to climate-related problems.

“In our communities we face lots of problems due to climate change, including flooding, waterlogging and the scarcity of safe water, which leads to health hazards like waterborne diseases,” explains Farjana Akhter, 18


The NDC Accelerator Trust Fund is a new project preparation financing facility aimed at fast tracking sustainable projects in line with the targets of the 2015 Paris climate conference.

The NDF Accelerator Trust Fund is one of four pillars of the IDB's new NDC Invest platform. NDF is the anchor investor to the Fund with a contribution of EUR 10 million approved in January 2017.


Nordic Climate Facility, an NDF-financed challenge fund for innovative climate change projects, will launch a new call for proposals on 28 August 2017.

The seventh call for proposals of the Nordic Climate Facility (NCF) will be open from 28 August to 29 September 2017.

The rapid urbanisation of Africa and opportunities for Nordic-African cooperation were discussed in Helsinki last week at a conference co-organised by NDF.

The Africa’s Urban Future conference took place on Friday, 12 May and was organised by the Nordic Africa Institute, University of Helsinki, Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Nordic Development Fund.
